The Environmental Forces

We start by modeling the river’s energy to understand the stress placed on your crossing. Our reports provide detailed hydraulic and geomorphic data to establish the baseline threat level.

Hydraulic flood modeling

We model water surface elevation, depth, and velocity for 2- through 100-year return period flood events to predict peak stress loads.

Total Scour Analysis

We calculate the maximum potential scour depth by combining General Scour (limiting velocity), Local Bend Scour (Lacey method), and Dune Scour (bed-form migration)

debris impact

We specifically model scour depth with and without Large Woody Debris (LWD), as debris accumulation is often the tipping point for pipeline exposure.

The asset’s capacity

Data on the river is only useful when compared against the physical limits of the pipe. We determine the structural health of the asset and forecast future risks.

coating & physical condition

Where the pipeline is exposed, we perform a detailed visual inspection to document coating damage to ensuring corrosion protection systems remain intact.

MAUSL Calculations

We calculate the Maximum Allowable Unsupported Span Length for both Bending and Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIVs) based on your specific pipe diameter and wall thickness.

Exposure prediction

We forecast if bank erosion will expose the pipeline over a 10, 20, or 50-year horizon, giving you lead time to plan interventions before an emergency arises.

Bank Stability & Factor of Safety

We apply a Bank Failure Desktop Risk Assessment to score the likelihood of slope failure (e.g., “Unlikely” vs. “Likely”) based on soil type, bank angle, and vegetation.

Validating Existing Mitigation

We don’t just recommend new fixes; we verify old ones. Our surveys assess the condition of existing countermeasures—such as concrete matting or riprap—to determine if they are still intact or effective.

Quantified Risk Scoring

We assign a Total Risk Score to every crossing. This allows you to categorize your assets objectively.

Low risk

The crossing shows no immediate signs of instability. Bank failure is rated as “Unlikely” or “Rare,” and the pipeline has sufficient depth of cover.

  • Action Required: Continue routine inspections at standard intervals.

moderate risk

The site exhibits specific stressors, such as the accumulation of Large Woody Debris (LWD) or early signs of bank migration, but the pipeline is not yet compromised.

  • Action Required: Event-Based Monitoring. Trigger inspections immediately following flood stages or extreme weather.

high risk

The asset is facing “Likely” or “Almost Certain” bank failure, or scour predictions indicate imminent exposure or spanning.

  • Action Required: Immediate Intervention. Mobilize for detailed engineering design.
